Learn Python
by playing.

Start from zero and become a backend developer who can build real APIs.

Benkyu is a learning platform built like an actual RPG. You follow one path of hands-on courses with over 1,000 small lessons, your code runs and gets graded the moment you write it, and everything you learn earns you XP. The whole point is to keep you playing long enough to actually get good.

Curriculum

What you'll actually learn

One backend developer path, built from standalone courses you take in order. Every stage ends with something you actually built.

01

Foundations

Learn Python across 174 lessons, get comfortable in Linux and Git, and build your first real project, a study log that runs in the terminal.

02

The web and data

You learn HTTP clients and SQL, then turn your study log into a real API with a database behind it.

03

Thinking like an engineer

Object-oriented and functional Python, data structures and algorithms, and builds like a gacha simulator and a route finder. You close the stage with your first personal project.

04

Production systems

You pick up Go, write real HTTP servers, learn Docker and pub/sub architecture, wire AI into a backend, and ship a URL shortener and a final capstone. The last course is about getting hired.

Features

Built so you keep going.

Most people who give up on programming don't fail, they just stop showing up. These are the systems that make you want to come back.

Skill Tree

A talent tree with 30 nodes across five disciplines. Build it around the way you like to learn, and respec with gems whenever you change your mind.

Endless Tower

An endless climb where every floor gets harder and pays out more. Your best floor goes on the leaderboard.

Algorithm Dojo

LeetCode-style problems in Easy, Medium and Hard. Your runtime gets tracked too, so you can also compete on speed.

Boss Rush

Every chapter ends with a boss mission and no hints. In Boss Rush you take them on back to back.

Guilds

Join a guild, climb the ranks from Member to Guildmaster, and talk in real-time chat while you learn.

Friends & DMs

Add friends, send DMs with read receipts, see who's online. Learning sticks better when someone's in it with you.

Daily Loop

Login streaks, a seven-day bonus cycle and daily quests. Small reasons to show up every day.

Shop & Collectibles

Open chests with coins and gems, collect familiars and name colors, and put together an avatar that's yours.

How it works

How Benkyu works

You learn the way working developers do. Read a little, build a lot, and let the game keep score.

01

Every lesson is real code

You read a short explanation, write actual code, and it gets graded on the spot. No lecture videos to sit through and no filler to click past.

02

You get stronger by writing code

Every lesson you clear earns XP. You level up, your skill tree grows, and your progress in the game is your progress as a programmer.

03

Some walls you can't break alone

The hardest problems are meant for guilds. You compete with friends, read each other's code and pick things up from each other along the way.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

I've never written code before. Is this for me?

Yes. The first course, Learn Python, assumes you know nothing at all. It starts with your very first print() and builds up from there.

How much does it cost?

Pre-registering is free and so is the closed beta. We'll announce pricing for the full release before launch.

What do I need to play?

Just a modern browser. There's nothing to install, since your code runs in a sandbox inside the browser. The project courses use the free benkyu CLI, so you also learn to build on your own machine.

When can I play?

The closed beta is planned for 2026, and people who pre-registered get invited first.

What languages is it available in?

English, Japanese, and Chinese.
